Until the search engines tell us, link building will always be a major part of your SEO strategy. There have (and still are) many ways to implement link building packages for your clients. The link wheel is the newest one but is it really a cool name with nothing else to it? Let’s discuss.
What is a Link Wheel?
A link wheel is basically using social media profiles such as external blogs, profiles and article marketing in creating a mini network of links from these sites into each and back into your business site. Really this is not earth shattering or anything I would call ground breaking, but I would say it is a solid and “creative” way to do link building in areas that you should already be doing currently. At the end of the day, you must be creative in developing your link building strategy in order to reap the benefits of it. Key to this technique is to focuses on building high quality, relevant, dofollow backlinks (ones that the search engines recognize and value) to the site you are targeting. Think of traditional one way link building practice like a bicycle wheel. The hub or the center of the wheel is your business site and all of the spokes on the wheel are each of your links going to that site.
Now a link wheel adds additional spokes (one way links) so that the center or hub does not get all of the attention. This helps build the authority of each spoke so that the links that come off each spoke to your business site are worth more. We call this “link juice” in the SEO world.
Are Link Wheels Fact or Fiction?
First of all, there is no magic bullet for developing a link building program that will handle all your needs. Like everything, opinions will vary on this specific topic because execution and results will play a huge part in what you hear from other link building experts. The concept is not new although the term is. The basic thing is getting backlinks and letting the link value go to your site. So, if you only depend on several sites, it will not bring you a huge advantage. The key is that you need to mix link sources and link building strategies together to have a overall effective link building campaign.
